Water Heater Maintenance

How to Maintain Your Water Heater for Maximum Longevity

Your water heater is one of the hardest-working appliances in your home. With proper maintenance, it can deliver reliable hot water for many years while helping you avoid unexpected breakdowns and save money on energy bills. At Mister Water Heater, we recommend following these simple steps to extend the lifespan of your unit in your Indianapolis home and keep it running at peak performance.

Water Heater Maintenance Checklist

1. Flush Sediment from the Tank: Over time, minerals and sediment from the water supply settle at the bottom of your tank. This buildup can reduce efficiency, cause strange noises, and even lead to premature failure.

How to do it: Once or twice a year, drain several gallons from the tank until the water runs clear. For DIYers, shut off the power or gas supply and attach a hose to the drain valve. If you’re unsure, give Mister Water Heater a call!

2. Inspect and Replace the Anode Rod: The anode rod attracts corrosive minerals that would otherwise attack the inside of your tank.

Pro tip: Check the rod every 2-3 years. If it’s less than a half-inch thick or covered in calcium, replace it to prevent corrosion.

3. Test the Temperature and Pressure Relief (T&P) Valve: The T&P valve is a vital safety feature that releases pressure if your tank overheats.

How to do it: Lift the valve’s lever to ensure water flows out—then it should snap back into place. If water keeps draining or nothing happens, the valve needs replacing.

4. Check for Leaks or Corrosion: Routinely inspect around the base and pipes. Look for pooling water, rust spots, or dampness which could be signs of a bigger issue. Early detection can prevent major water damage down the road.

5. Adjust the Temperature Setting: Set your water heater to 120°F. This is the sweet spot: hot enough for comfort, not so hot as to cause scalding or extra wear.

6. Schedule a Professional Inspection: Have a licensed technician inspect your water heater annually, especially for gas or hybrid models. This ensures safe operation and catches small problems before they become costly emergencies.
